Canary Islands: Spain’s leading region in unemployment decline so far this year

Unemployment in the Canary Islands decreased by 14,500 people compared to the previous quarter.

In the first quarter, the Canary Islands experienced the most significant decrease in unemployment across Spain, with a reduction of 14,500 people from the previous quarter, marking a 7.70% decrease. The latest data from the Labour Force Survey (EPA) by the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that the total number of unemployed individuals in the region now stands at 174,200.


Year-on-year, the islands have seen a reduction of 27,900 in the number of unemployed, equating to a 13.81% decline. The current unemployment rate is 14.88%, while the activity rate is at 60.20%.

The labor force in the Canary Islands saw a slight decrease of 4,700 people, or 0.40%, from the previous quarter, yet it has grown by 18,900 people or 1.64% since the same period in 2023.

As of the end of March, employment figures in the Canary Islands reached 996,200, which is an increase of 9,800 or 0.99% since the end of December 2023. Comparing year-on-year data, the region has added 46,800 jobs, a 4.93% increase.

Furthermore, the population over 16 years in the Canary Islands has reached 1.9 million, up by 3,500 or 0.18% from the previous quarter and 26,900 or 1.40% from the same time last year. This demographic growth contributes to the broader economic indicators and reflects the dynamic changes in the region’s labor market.
