The Canary Islands will face another day of heat, calima and strong winds this Saturday, 26 September, according to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency Aemet. The weather will be marked by medium and high cloud cover across much of the archipelago, together with suspended dust that will become more noticeable in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas, especially during the second half of the day.
Temperatures will remain high in several areas. Gran Canaria is expected to record the highest values, with temperatures exceeding 34°C in inland areas and on the southern and western slopes. Tenerife and La Gomera may also reach 34°C locally. Light and occasional rain cannot be ruled out in parts of the western islands and Gran Canaria, although the main features of the day will be heat, calima and wind.
The wind will begin the day blowing from the north-east and may be strong at times in exposed areas of the mountainous islands. Occasional very strong gusts are possible during the early hours. As the morning progresses, the wind will lose strength and become generally light and variable.
Tenerife: haze, cloud and up to 34°C locally
In Tenerife, skies will be mostly cloudy or overcast with medium and high cloud. There is a low probability of light and occasional rain during the second half of the day, although rainfall is not expected to be the dominant feature.
The calima will become more noticeable in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas, particularly during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will exceed 30°C on the coasts and in low-lying areas on all sides of the island. Locally, values may reach 34°C on the northern and southern coasts.
The north-easterly wind may blow strongly at times on the south-eastern side and at the north-western tip of the island during the early hours. Occasional very strong gusts are possible, before the wind eases from midday. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures are expected to range between 26°C and 31°C.
La Gomera may also reach 34°C
La Gomera will also see cloudy or overcast skies with medium and high cloud. There is a low probability of light and occasional rain during the second half of the day. The dust haze will become more widespread in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas during the afternoon and evening.
Temperatures will exceed 30°C across the island and may reach 34°C locally. The north-easterly wind will be moderate and may blow strongly on the southern slopes during the early hours, with occasional very strong gusts. It will ease during the afternoon. In San Sebastián de La Gomera, the forecast points to a minimum of 26°C and a maximum of 29°C.
La Palma: warm coasts and possible light rain
In La Palma, medium and high cloud will also predominate throughout the day. Aemet does not rule out light and occasional rain, both during the early hours and again in the second half of Saturday. The calima will become more pronounced in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas from the afternoon onwards.
Temperatures will exceed 30°C along the coast and in low-lying mid-altitude areas. The wind will blow from the east and may be strong at times in the far north and south during the early hours. It will ease in the afternoon. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, temperatures are expected to range between 25°C and 29°C.
El Hierro: cloud, haze and warm coastal areas
El Hierro will have cloudy or overcast skies with medium and high cloud. Light rain cannot be ruled out during the second half of the day. The haze will be most noticeable in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas during the afternoon and evening.
Temperatures will exceed 30°C on the coast and in low-lying mid-altitude areas. The north-easterly wind may be occasionally strong on the south-eastern and north-western slopes during the early hours, before easing and becoming light and variable. In Valverde, the forecast gives a minimum temperature of 23°C and a maximum of 29°C.
Gran Canaria to record the highest temperatures
Gran Canaria is expected to see the highest temperatures in the Canary Islands this Saturday. Skies will be mostly cloudy or overcast with medium and high cloud, and light, occasional rain cannot be ruled out towards the end of the day.
The haze will become more pronounced in mid-altitude areas and at higher elevations, especially during the second half of the day. Aemet forecasts temperatures above 34°C in inland areas and on the southern and western slopes, as well as more locally in the Agaete Valley.
In these areas, night-time temperatures will barely fall below 26°C, meaning the heat will also remain noticeable overnight. A strong north-easterly wind will blow on the south-eastern and western slopes during the early hours and may produce occasional very strong gusts. The wind will ease during the afternoon.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are expected to range between 25°C and 29°C.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura remain hot and hazy
In Lanzarote, skies are expected to be cloudy or overcast with medium and high cloud. Low cloud will also affect the northern and eastern coasts during the first half of the day. There will be haze at high altitudes, while temperatures will exceed 30°C in inland areas and on the southern slopes. In Arrecife, temperatures are forecast to range between 25°C and 31°C.
Fuerteventura will see similar conditions, with abundant medium and high cloud and haze at higher altitudes. Temperatures will exceed 30°C to 32°C in inland and southern areas. The wind may blow strongly south of Jandía during the early hours before easing during the morning. In Puerto del Rosario, temperatures are expected to range between 24°C and 28°C.
Overall, Saturday will bring another warm and hazy day to the Canary Islands, with Gran Canaria likely to record the highest temperatures, calima becoming more noticeable at altitude and strong early wind gusts affecting several exposed areas.
