The Canary Islands will see a mixture of cloud, light showers and warm temperatures this Monday, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasting temperatures of up to 30°C in parts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Cloudier conditions are expected across the north of the islands, particularly during the first half of the day. Light rain cannot be ruled out in some northern and mid-altitude areas, while most southern and coastal locations are likely to enjoy clearer skies.
In Tenerife, cloudy intervals will predominate in the north, where occasional light rain may develop, especially across the mid-altitude areas during the morning. Elsewhere on the island, skies will remain mostly clear, although some cloud may form over the south-east early in the day.
Temperatures are expected to remain broadly stable, although minimum temperatures may rise slightly. The warmest conditions will be found in southern parts of Tenerife, where temperatures could locally reach 30°C near the coast. Similar values are possible in the south-east of the island’s metropolitan area.
Winds will generally be light to moderate, blowing from the north or north-east. At higher elevations, particularly around Tenerife’s central peaks, winds will initially be light and westerly before strengthening to moderate or locally strong speeds as the day progresses.
Gran Canaria
A similar weather pattern is forecast for Gran Canaria. Cloudy skies are expected across northern areas, with a possibility of light rain, particularly in the mid-altitude zones and during the morning. The remainder of the island will be mostly clear or only slightly cloudy.
Temperatures may rise slightly, particularly in the south-east. The mercury could reach around 30°C locally in mid-altitude areas and in lower-lying parts of the south and west.
Winds will initially be light to moderate from the north before strengthening and shifting towards the north-east during the morning. Stronger gusts are possible along the south-eastern coast and in the far west of the island.
In the mountainous interior of Gran Canaria, winds are expected to remain generally light and westerly.
Overall, Monday will therefore bring contrasting conditions across the archipelago: more cloud and the possibility of occasional light summer showers in northern and higher areas, while southern parts of the islands remain considerably sunnier and warmer.
Aemet’s observations for Monday, 24 August, confirm temperatures remaining mild during the early hours across much of the archipelago, with values above 20°C already recorded at several coastal stations.
