The Canary Islands will experience a mixed weather day this Monday, 28 September, with patchy cloud, a chance of occasional rain, high-altitude haze and temperatures that may locally reach or exceed 30°C.
According to the State Meteorological Agency Aemet, the day will begin with more unsettled conditions, especially during the first half of the day. Cloudy intervals will predominate across the archipelago, and there will be a low probability of occasional showers.
The haze will continue at higher altitudes, although it is expected to gradually ease as the day progresses. Despite these changing conditions, Aemet does not forecast any significant weather events during the day.
Temperatures will remain largely unchanged or fall slightly in some areas. The decrease will be more noticeable along the coasts of the more mountainous islands.
Cloudy morning with possible showers
The first half of Monday will be marked by intervals of cloud and a low chance of occasional rain in parts of the Canary Islands. Aemet also does not rule out the possibility that some showers may be accompanied by an isolated storm during the early hours of the day.
The unsettled conditions will be linked to the remaining instability affecting the archipelago after recent cloudier and more humid weather. However, the forecast points to a gradual improvement as the day advances, with the weather becoming more stable during the afternoon.
Rain to give way to clearer skies
During the second half of the day, skies are expected to become mostly clear across much of the archipelago. Even so, cloud cover may persist in the interior of the mountainous islands. These inland areas are where Aemet continues to forecast the possibility of some occasional rainfall during the afternoon.
The change between morning and afternoon will therefore be one of the main features of Monday’s weather. The day will start with more cloud and a chance of showers, before clearer skies become more widespread later on.
High-altitude haze gradually eases
Another feature of Monday’s forecast will be the presence of haze at higher altitudes. Suspended dust will remain visible in some areas during the day, although Aemet expects it to gradually dissipate.
The haze will therefore become less noticeable as the hours pass, coinciding with the broader trend towards more stable conditions across much of the archipelago.
Light winds and coastal breezes
The wind will generally be light and easterly across the Canary Islands. Coastal breezes will also predominate in many areas, contributing to relatively calm conditions near the shore.
On the mountain peaks, a light westerly wind is expected. No major wind episode is forecast for the day, in line with Aemet’s assessment that Monday will not bring significant adverse weather events.
Temperatures may still exceed 30°C
Although temperatures may fall slightly in some areas, the heat will not disappear completely. Aemet forecasts that temperatures may locally reach or exceed 30°C in mid-altitude and low-lying areas of the islands.
In the two Canary Islands capitals, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is expected to range between 24°C and 30°C, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will see temperatures between 24°C and 28°C.
Overall, Monday will bring a gradual improvement in the weather across the Canary Islands. Cloud and possible showers will dominate the morning, while the afternoon will tend to become clearer, with haze easing and temperatures remaining warm in several areas.
