Rain warnings issued for three Canary Islands: thunderstorms not ruled out in Tenerife

Aemet warns of a changeable Tuesday in the Canary Islands, with yellow rain alerts, possible thunderstorms and high rainfall probabilities in parts of Tenerife.

The State Meteorological Agency Aemet is maintaining yellow warnings for rain in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and El Hierro this Tuesday, 6 October, on a day expected to bring unsettled conditions to several parts of the Canary Islands.

The forecast points to cloudy spells, scattered showers and the possibility of occasional thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon. In Tenerife, some areas face a particularly high probability of rainfall. According to Aemet’s data, the metropolitan area and La Orotava have a 75% chance of rain, while Güímar has a 70% probability.

The agency has highlighted as one of the day’s most significant weather factors that occasional thunderstorms cannot be ruled out in the eastern islands and Tenerife during the afternoon.

Cloudy spells, showers and possible thunderstorms

According to Aemet’s forecast for the Canary Islands, the eastern province and Tenerife will see cloudy intervals throughout the day. Scattered showers may develop, particularly in the afternoon, and could be accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas.

These showers are expected to be more likely in the central islands, where atmospheric instability will be more noticeable. In the rest of the archipelago, cloudy spells will also predominate, although rainfall could occur later in the day on the northern and eastern slopes of La Palma.

The combination of yellow warnings, scattered showers, possible thunderstorms and haze will make Tuesday a changeable day across the Canary Islands, with particular attention focused on Tenerife and the eastern islands during the afternoon.

Up to a 75% chance of rain in Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the islands where rainfall probabilities are highest this Tuesday. Aemet’s forecast data indicate that the metropolitan area and La Orotava have the greatest likelihood of rain, with a 75% probability.

Güímar also shows a high chance of rainfall, at 70%. Other municipalities in Tenerife also have notable probabilities. Candelaria, Arona and Granadilla de Abona all have a 65% chance of rain. These figures indicate the forecast probability of precipitation in each area and help identify the parts of the island where rain is most likely during the day.

Although the forecast does not mean that rainfall will occur everywhere or continuously, it does point to a greater likelihood of showers in several areas of Tenerife, particularly as the day progresses.

Light haze at high altitude

The forecast also includes the presence of light haze at high altitudes. This haze will be more noticeable in the mid-altitude areas and on the peaks of the central islands, as well as over Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The presence of suspended dust will therefore remain another factor in the weather situation, although the main focus of the day will be the yellow rain warnings and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms.

Temperatures with few changes

Temperatures are expected to remain broadly stable across the Canary Islands. Aemet forecasts few changes overall, although maximum temperatures may fall slightly in inland areas.

The two Canary Islands capitals will see very similar values. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is expected to record temperatures between 23°C and 26°C. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will range between 22°C and 26°C.

Light north-easterly wind

The wind will generally be light from the north-east. However, it may gain some strength along the south-eastern and north-western coasts during the afternoon. At mid-altitudes, the wind will turn to the east, while on the peaks it will blow from the south-west, according to Aemet’s forecast for this Tuesday.

These wind conditions, combined with cloudy spells, possible showers, light high-altitude haze and the chance of thunderstorms, will contribute to a day of variable weather across the archipelago.

Yellow warnings on three islands

Aemet’s yellow warnings for rain remain in place for Tenerife, Gran Canaria and El Hierro. The warning level indicates that the weather could affect certain activities, especially in areas where showers become more intense or are accompanied by thunderstorms.

For Tenerife, attention will focus particularly on the afternoon, when the possibility of occasional thunderstorms has not been ruled out. The same applies to the eastern islands, where atmospheric instability may also lead to isolated storm activity.

Overall, Tuesday will be marked by unstable weather in several areas of the Canary Islands, with yellow warnings for rain on three islands, high rainfall probabilities in parts of Tenerife, light haze at altitude and generally stable temperatures.
